Billy Kenda
A rising star from the Central Desert
Exhibition opens 3-5 pm Sunday 1 July 2012
Exhibition duration 4 weeks
Born 1972. Language: Luritja. Skin: Tjampitjimpa. Billy Kenda began painting in 2004 at the age of 32. He has participated in several group and solo exhibitions and has been selected to hang in the prestigious Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award later this year.
Kenda’s work is influenced by the majestic landscape and colours of his mothers country in the West MacDonnell Ranges where he was raised. His observations of travellers speeding through the Central Desert regions show drivers seemingly indifferent to the richness and splendour of the landscape around them.
Kendas paintings unmask the inherent beauty of the desert with crimson and purple skies, blue hills and golden sands issuing a bold invitation to pause, contemplate and observe. More recently his work has even included flying saucers. All works acrylic on canvas.
